Gunnar Olson is the Communications and Strategy Manager for the Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), where he has built on his background as an experienced journalist to earn a reputation as an engaging, trusted and articulate spokesperson and leader for causes important to Greater Des Moines. He is the lead organizer of the Tomorrow Plan Speaker Series, which hosts national thought-leaders who share ideas, insights, and inspiration with regional influencer s to advance the sustainable development of Greater Des Moines.

Through the MPO, he has been deeply involved in the water trails initiative seeking to activate 150 miles of rivers and creeks throughout the Central Iowa. He is currently leading the Strategy Team of the Central Iowa Water Trails Incubator, a consortium of regional organizations working collaboratively to implement the water trails plan, notably the creation of a whitewater park in downtown Des Moines by mitigating three dangerous low-head dams. He was the primary author of a successful $25 million BUILD grant application for the water trails project, accelerating its implementation.

Prior to joining the MPO, he was the public affairs manager for the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART) and a staff writer with The Des Moines Register.

Peter Stevenson brings 20 years of experience in the nonprofit cultural arena to his role as Executive Director of CMA (Civic Music Association). Previously Peter served as Director of Development at the Des Moines Symphony and Academy, where he oversaw significant annual fund growth and the successful completion of a capital campaign that raised over $10 million. A graduate of the University of Iowa with a master’s degree in art history, Peter is a former Fulbright scholar who has used his knowledge of art and culture to develop exhibitions and create interpretive programs at many leading institutions, including The Field Museum in Chicago, The Art Institute of Chicago, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) and The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. At SFMOMA, he managed adult public programs, including collaborative projects involving the San Francisco Symphony and San Francisco Opera. His interpretive specialties are handheld audio and multimedia tours, as well as Web sites dedicated to specific exhibitions and individuals. Projects Peter has managed have won many awards from the American Association of Museums and the National Association for Interpretation.

We will meet at the north doors for a 30-45 minute tour of the building and to learn more about Blackbird’s developments in DSM currently then follow-up by visiting the Iowa Tap Room for a cold one.

Chad Comer, Curator

September luncheon will be at the Blank Park Zoo.

The luncheon will begin at 11:45 and last till 1:00.

Chad Comer will be the speaker, he is currently the zoo Curator.

He is a graduate of Wichita State University.  Chad began his career at the Sedwick County Zoo working with the Great Apes and primates, large carnivores, marsupials and one of the largest bird collections in the country.  He is a member of the Red-fronted macaw SSP coordinator and studbook Keeper.  Also a member of the Ratite and Parrot TAG, which oversees animal management of all AZA zoos.
